TAMPA - The University of Tampa women closed out a tiring start to their season with an 80-54 victory over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Monday at the Bob Martinez Sports Center.
Sheena Walton led the Spartans (6-1) with 15 points. Erica Woodard, Tiara Cook and Kym Taylor each scored 12 points.
"We're pretty pleased to be 6-1," UT coach Tom Jessee said. "To get out of that stretch at 6-1, against that caliber of teams, we feel pretty fortunate."
The win Monday closed out a stretch in which the Spartans played seven games in 10 days. It included a road trip to California, a road trip to Georgia and featured key victories against No. 11 Valdosta State and West Georgia last weekend.
With their Sunshine State Conference opener at Rollins looming Saturday, the Spartans could use a break.
"We're looking forward to getting back to practice," Jessee said. "We've felt like an NBA team. All we've done is play and do shoot-arounds."
The Spartans emerged from this stretch healthy, though guard DeShaydia Mackey missed two games and forward Alexa Kane missed one. Kane walked around campus last Wednesday with her right foot in a walking boot. But she hit double figures in both contests last weekend.
Jessee said Kane has had foot problems off and on and the boot is a precaution. Mackey wore a neck brace at times last week as a precaution. Kane said she's ready to benefit from the Spartans' slower schedule in December, which features only three games.
"I guess you could say we really do need it, yeah," Kane said. "It's crunch time, as far as classes and the end of the semester. The traveling has not been the funnest thing."
