Tampa police are investigating a body found in a ditch alongside North Dale Mabry Highway.
About 2 p.m. today, Department of Corrections workers were picking up trash on the road when they discovered the clothed body of a man in about one to two feet of water. The workers flagged down a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputy, who called Tampa police.
Police are awaiting the medical examiner's arrival to receive clearance to remove the body.
Northbound traffic, just south of Hillsborough Avenue, has slowed as curious drivers check out the scene.
The body is that of a white man, police say, estimated to be in his 30s or 40s. He was wearing jeans, white tennis shoes, a white T-shirt and a button-down shirt. Police have not found any identification or belongings yet.
"We are trying to determine how he got here and that will determine where our investigation goes from here," police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said.
The ditch runs along Al Lopez Park. Davis said the department gets calls for service about homeless people sleeping in the park.
Police do not know how long the man has been there, though likely more than a few hours, Davis said.
