ST. LEO - It was a rough week for Saint Leo's women's basketball team, which lost both of its games in the Colorado Christian University Thanksgiving Classic in Lakewood, Colo. this past weekend.
Host Colorado Christian, which entered the game 0-6, outscored the Lions 44-20 in the first half en route to a 64-54 win on Friday. Saint Leo shot just over 30 percent for the game.
Missouri-Rolla shot nearly 60 percent and made 8-of-12 3-pointers in a 90-67 victory on Saturday. Saint Leo is now 3-2 on the season.
Forwards Dominique Daniels and Amanda Holloway each averaged 12.5 points per game in the tournament, and Latasha Lawrence averaged 10.5. Holloway has scored 10 or more points in all of the Lions' games this season, and leads the team in scoring (12.8 per game). Daniels leads in rebounding (6.2 per game).
Saint Leo averaged 20 fewer rebounds per game than its opponents, one of the major problems that led to the losses. The Lions don't play again until Dec. 7, at Palm Beach Atlantic, and their next home game is Dec. 15 against West Florida.
VOLLEYBALL: Middle blocker Kaitlin McKenna was named the 2007 American Volleyball Coaches Association South Region Freshman of the Year last week, while setter Michelle Nogueras was named to the All-Region team.
McKenna set a school record in hitting percentage (.452), which ranked second in the nation to Tampa's Erin Clark. She was also named an Honorable Mention All-Region.
Nogueras, the 2006 AVCA Freshman of the Year, set school records for assists (1,576) and assists per game (11.3), and led this year's team in digs (392) and service aces (60) as well.
