Kevin Timothy, a junior at Brandon, finished as the Class 2A state runner-up at 130 pounds last season, compiling a 38-4 overall record along the way. This season, at 135 pounds, he's on a mission to win his first individual state title.
Coming off your runner-up finish last season, I'm sure I can guess the answer to this question. What are you're goals for this season?
This year, I don't just want to win states, I want to dominate states. After losing by a point to a kid Cape Coral Mariner's Mason Maher who I felt I should have beaten easily, I use it as a motivating factor more than anything, to just drive myself to remember what it felt like to lose and to make me understand that I've got goals to achieve this year. I've really got to push myself because I can't take second this year. I've got to win it all.
What have you done between last season and now to make sure you're going to accomplish that?
Training over the summer, every day. The match has always been on my mind. There's not been a day I haven't thought about the match, and every time I think about it I just want to get up and work out and do what I have to do to make sure that something like that doesn't happen again.
Your older brother, Tommy, won two state titles at Brandon, his second one as a senior last season. Does he ever give you any grief over not having one of your own?
Ah, not really. It does put pressure on me that he won two. He won his first one as a junior, and I guess I'm kind of held to those standards to make sure that I win it this year, to make sure that he doesn't achieve more than me.
Is wrestling a family thing? Is it something your dad did, or how did you get into it?
My dad Tom did wrestling. He wrestled in high school and college a little bit, and he started us off at a young age with it, around 5 years old. It's really just something we caught on to at an early age, and he really just pushed us into it and it paid off.
What's kept you going with the sport?
To begin with, I just like to win. Going out there and beating somebody and showing that you're better than everyone else, that's a factor that kept me interested in the sport. A college scholarship was a key factor also. You've got something to work for; it's not that you're just working out for the heck of it. You've got goals, and you want to prove to yourself that you can do it.
