Published: November 27, 2007

Brandon football standout Samir Baker was arrested early Friday morning on a charge of violating his probation.

Baker, listed as Samair Alexander Baker, of 815 Valley Hill Drive in Brandon, was picked up at 1:36 a.m. Friday by sheriff's deputies on an outstanding warrant, according to a Hillsborough County sheriff's office report. He was released from jail Friday afternoon after posting $500 bond.

Baker, 18, pleaded no contest in March 2007 to a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of a crash and received six months of probation, according to the state attorney's office. The violation of probation stemmed from that charge.

Baker, a senior, was a two-way standout this season for the Eagles, who were eliminated from the Class 5A state playoffs by Lakeland on Nov. 23. Baker accounted for 1,053 yards and 17 touchdowns on offense, and contributed 49 tackles, 6.5 sacks, three interceptions and another score on defense.

Baker could not be reached for comment.

A LITTLE MOTIVATION: Entering what would be his final game against Hillsborough, a team he hasn't had much luck with, Armwood senior RB Eric Smith received a little pep talk from his brother, Hawks junior LB Petey Smith.

"He played varsity since he was a freshman, and he only played two complete games against Hillsborough. Every time he got hurt," said Petey Smith, referring to the fractured elbow Eric suffered in the 2006 season opener and the foot injury Eric sustained in the regular-season meeting with the Terriers on Oct. 18. "So I told him, 'Just take it personal tonight. It's your last game versus Hillsborough.'"

Eric responded with arguably his best game of the season, rushing for 160 yards and three touchdowns in the Hawks' 35-0 victory.

"You know, they got a lot of critics over there," Petey Smith said, "but he just shut them all up Friday."

GIDDINS WILL PLAY: Though Armwood fielded a complete team for the first time this season in Friday's win over Hillsborough, one Hawk was limited. Junior DE Ryne Giddins, who strained a quad in his right leg during practice earlier in the week, only saw the field during third downs.

However, Giddins said after the game his leg felt fine and that he would play this week against Plant.

PLANT-ARMWOOD TIX: Tickets for Friday night's Class 4A region final between Plant and Armwood at Lyle Flagg Field in Seffner will be sold at each school beginning Wednesday, Hawks coach Sean Callahan confirmed Monday.

Individual tickets for the game are $7. For information, contact Armwood officials at (813) 744-8040 and Plant officials at (813) 272-3033.

KYLE TO CLEMSON: Newsome senior swimmer Kelli Kyle signed with Clemson last week, Newsome athletic director Paul Lindstrom confirmed.

She finished second at state in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.81, good enough for All-America status.

TBBCA RAISES MONEY FOR CANCER: The Tampa Boys Basketball Coaches Association will be raising money to support the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research this week. All proceeds will be donated in the name of former Armwood basketball coach Doug Walker, who died of cancer.

The fundraiser began Monday and will continue through Saturday. All boys basketball coaches will designate one home game during the week to ask for donations at the door. Those interested in helping can contact Plant boys basketball coach Mike Phillips at (813) 272-3033 ext. 266.
