Zink Has No Ligament Damage In Right Knee

Published: November 27, 2007

Tampa Catholic running back Drew Zink received good news Tuesday, as an MRI revealed no ligament tears in his injured right knee.

TC coach Bob Henriquez said Zink's injury remains classified as a sprained knee and his availability for Friday's 2A state semifinal game against Miami Archbishop Carroll will come down to how the back responds to treatment.

"Right now, it's a matter of how much therapy he can tolerate and whether he'll be able to run and cut on the knee later in the week," Henriquez said.

Henriquez told The Tampa Tribune in a video interview on Monday that Zink was doubtful for the game. He said Tuesday that he might take the decision right up to game time, depending on how Zink responds to treatment.

The good news is, if the Crusaders are able to win Friday, there's a decent chance Zink could play in a state championship game played next week.

Sophomore Henry McCloud likely would become the primary ball carrier on Friday night if Zink were unable to play.

BASEBALL: Tampa Catholic senior Will Knox has verbally committed to Chipola Junior College.

Knox, an infielder and a three-year starter, earned team offensive player of the year honors as a junior after compiling a team-best .446 average with five doubles, 10 RBIs and 18 runs scored. He was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County honorable-mention selection last season, and was named to the 2007 Tony Saladino All-Tournament Team.

In other baseball news, Brandon junior Michael Smith is slated to participate in the 2008 International High School Power Showcase Home Run Derby, scheduled for Jan. 5 at Tropicana Field.

The field of 63 participants contains at least one representative from each of the 50 states in the U.S. as well as international representatives from Canada, France and Germany. Smith, an infielder, is one of five participants from Florida.

Also, former Robinson infielder Brad Roberts has signed with Florida Gulf Coast. Roberts, who spent last season, his sophomore year, with Pasco-Hernando Community College, was one of three local players in the Eagles' six-member signing class, joining Gaither senior pitcher Eric Doty and St. Petersburg senior pitcher/infielder Jacob Rogers.

POLL SHUFFLE: Armwood moved up one spot to No..22 in the latest USA Today Super 25 national football rankings after the Hawks dominated district rival Hillsborough 35-0 in last week's Class 4A regional semifinal. In other polls, the Hawks stayed at No..24 in the latest Rivals.com National Fab 50, but dropped one spot to No..5 in the latest Beef O' Brady's Top 25, which ranks Florida teams across all classifications. Kissimmee Osceola, which travels to Chamberlain for a Class 5A regional final Friday, swapped places with the Hawks.

Armwood hosts Plant, ranked No..12 in the Beef O' Brady's poll, in a highly anticipated Class 4A regional final Friday night at Lyle Flagg Field. The game will be televised live by Catch 47 and can be heard live on WDAE, 620 AM.

BLACKWELL REPRIMANDED: Freedom football coach Marquel Blackwell has been issued a letter of reprimand by the Hillsborough County School District for his involvement in a verbal confrontation with another Freedom teacher during school hours last month, spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said.

Cobbe said the letter will be entered into Blackwell's file and that he has 10 days to respond to the letter. She said no further action will be taken regarding the investigation once the 10-day waiting period ends.

Cobbe said the other teacher received a letter of direction, a lesser punishment, because Blackwell entered that teacher's classroom.

BOYS BASKETBALL: The Freedom boys basketball team certainly has been a surprise this season, starting the season 4-0 compared with a 2-20 overall record in 2006.
This season, the Patriots have beaten Armwood, Robinson, Seffner Christian and Alonso. On Monday, however, Armwood snapped Freedom's win streak with a 76-72 victory in overtime.

Armwood (2-3) was led by senior guard Adam Sollazzo's 39 points. Brendon Bertorello led Freedom with 24 points while Franklin Agholor added 21. After trailing by 15 points with three minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Hawks gained the lead but a buzzer-beater by Agholor sent the game into overtime.

"Everyone is treating us like we're different, but we're really not," Freedom coach Randy Grenon said. "The big thing is, none of those kids missed practice last year when we were terrible."
