How illegal immigration
was stopped in 1954
Many of our citizens believe that we cannot get rid of the millions of illegal immigrants we now have in our country and eliminate the cost and problems they cause. Fortunately, President Eisenhower showed us how to do it in 1954 and it worked for many years.
Eisenhower appointed retired General Joseph Swing to head the program called Operation Wetback. Because some immigration officials had political connections with special interest groups, Swing transferred them away from the border. Then officials conducted sweeps that rounded up many illegals. This caused many more illegals to leave our country voluntarily.
Illegals that were rounded up were not released at our border where they could quickly re-enter our country. They were put on buses and trains and released many miles into Mexico. Many others were put on ships and released at a Mexican port more than 500 miles south of our border.
All we need is the political will to do the same thing today. This means that we must get Congress to repeat what Eisenhower and Swing did. This includes enforced penalties for those who hire illegals.
Without jobs, illegals won't enter.

Illegal amnesty
is wrong
I am going to the Voter Registration Office to change my party affiliation. After watching the recent Democratic debate, I'm afraid I have no choice among the eight candidates, one of whom was absent last night. They just don't get the message about amnesty for illegal immigrants.
It seems they all want to take the easy way out, grant amnesty, run up more hospital and schooling charges for us taxpayers, and, give credit for having their babies here that then become automatic citizens.
These issues should be for the electorate to decide, not by a few elected representatives. In the meantime, all of the illegal immigrants here, and their children, should go right back from whence they came, be it Germany, Poland, Ireland or Mexico. I am 100 percent in favor of immigration but I am totally against ILLEGAL immigration.
A better system for work visas needs to be developed. But not the way politicians want to go about it. If housing, welfare and medical assistance are needed by "temporary workers" during their stay here, the company that uses this "temporary labor" should register them and pay for those services, not us taxpayers. I also believe that we need to crack down hard on companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants to get by the minimum wage and OSHA laws.

Are we asking too much?
Hernando County elected public officials prefer brick and mortar to flesh and blood. Sound too dramatic?
Not if you live on a respiratory disease-prone, rutted, eroding, dust-laden, limestone "road" in the Royal Highlands subdivision of Hernando County.
The Board of County Commissioners, even during this holiday season of giving and bona-fide compassion, continues to refuse paving these blighted roads, which when completed will enhance the good health and safety of infants, children, yuppies, Gen X'ers, boomers and senior Royal Highlands residents.
Instead, Chairman Stabins and Commissioners Rocco, Rowden, Russell, Kingsley apparently prefer and consider puncturing the budget by virtue of a close to $5million proposal for some $40,000 feet of space meant for the judiciary. Perhaps each of our elected public officials should re-examine their own code of ethics, which clearly "promises" the good and welfare of residents as their first and foremost priority.
Is living up to that mantra asking too much?

The value of
County Connection
I was reminded of the quality of the "County Connection," as I read opinions of Annie Williams in her position. The value of attending these sessions, for me, was meeting these officials in person and forming my own opinions. Now I no longer depend solely on other information, in deciding my choices when it's time to vote.
The more one learns, the less apt to make statements, when questions are in order.
