Mitchell Boys Win, Girls Lose Vs. Counryside

NEW PORT RICHEY – Mitchell's boys soccer team (8-2-1) earned its first ever victory against Class 6A, District 7 rival Countryside (3-4-2) 1-0 Tuesday night at Mustang Stadium, while the girls lost 1-0 to the Cougars in the first match of the evening.

The boys' game-winner was scored in the 67th minute by Steve Schultz, who cleaned up a Mitchell shot which deflected off Countryside keeper Greg Crowell. The goal initially was disallowed for offsides, but the officials changed the call. The play began with a free kick from 25 yards out caused by a Cougars hand-ball.

The Mustangs controlled the game throughout, nearly scoring in the first half on a shot by Ali Fawaz which deflected off the crossbar. Countryside did not generate a decent scoring chance until the 63rd minute, not even getting a corner kick until that time.

Now sitting at 1-1-1 in the district, Mitchell plays its final two district matches in the next week, against St. Petersburg on Friday and at Gaither next Tuesday (Dec. 4).

The Mitchell girls (7-2-1, 1-2) gave up a 28th-minute goal to Deanna Huffman and failed to capitalize on a string of scoring chances in the second half. In a three minute span, the Mustangs had five shots, four on goal, but none got through the Cougars (7-1, 2-1).

Coach Karl Kukec said he could tell his squad was a little flat in the early going, and as a result went with more aggressive lineups and pulled some of his usual starters in hopes of creating a spark.
