It has becoming increasingly annoying to me that there is much confusion about what the Florida Legislature recently did on the property tax question.
They did not propose to change any tax amounts. All they did was propose a change in distribution - supposedly to make it more equitable, but actually making things worse.
On the other hand, the amount of tax we pay is regulated locally through the millage rate. Many people, encouraged by misleading representative statements and newspaper reports, do not understand this very basic distinction.
If you think that the local/county government is spending too much - and raising all tax bills - then address it with your county commissioners. If you feel that Save Our Homes has created unfair inequities, then address it with your state legislative representative.
Quantity - the amount you pay - and quality - distribution of the burden - are completely different problems, both of which urgently need solutions. Until we understand how to separate these problems, the solution will be confused.
