Dr. Robert Ca
de, who led a team of researchers at the University of Florida that developed the magical elixir Gatorade, died Tuesday, but the multibillion-dollar industry he helped launch and the legend surrounding it will live on.
Cade and his peers wanted to help Florida football players replace carbohydrates and electrolytes lost while sweating. The first version of the liquid reportedly tasted like toilet cleaner; thankfully, lemon was added to make the stuff palatable and the Gators became known as a winning football team with remarkable endurance.
Cade never thought regular folks would like the drink, but its runaway popularity has earned the university some $150 million in royalties.
He and his colleagues will forever be known as the men who captured lightning in a bottle.
