Fayson Transferring From UF

Published: November 28, 2007

GAINESVILLE - Florida receiver Jarred Fayson decided about two weeks ago that he wanted to transfer. He will spend the next few days - or weeks; he isn't sure - trying to choose his next destination from among a set of Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conference schools. One thing is certain: Fayson will not transfer to another school in Florida.

In a telephone interview Tuesday, the former Hillsborough High standout said his release from his Florida scholarship prohibits him from transferring to other in-state schools. He also said his decision to transfer from Florida had more to do with "personal issues" than on-field concerns. Fayson didn't elaborate, but he said Gators coaches were accommodating.

"It went smooth," Fayson said. "They understood where I was coming from."

Fayson caught 12 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns and carried 19 times for 89 yards this season. The Gators used him as a receiver and as a tailback. He said he accepted his role in the offense, which likely would have expanded next season with the departure of Andre Caldwell, the school's all-time receptions leader.

"I took my role and ran with it," Fayson said.

Fayson's mother, Carla Powell, said the family has no hard feelings toward Florida and said she was thankful for her son's time with the Gators.

"It was a wonderful opportunity," Powell said, "to be a part of Gator Nation."

Fayson, a sophomore, can play two more seasons no matter where he transfers. If he transfers to a Bowl Subdivision school, he would have to sit out one year, during which he would be redshirted.

Also transferring from Florida is former Jefferson High star Trent Pupello, who received his release Tuesday. Pupello's father, Joe, confirmed the release Tuesday afternoon.

Pupello shuttled from tight end to defensive end and back to tight end in two seasons. According to Florida's game participation charts, the only game Pupello played in was the Gators' 59-20 win against Florida Atlantic on Nov. 17.

Pupello's release was received Tuesday at the University of South Florida football office; USF is a potential destination.

Tribune reporter Brett McMurphy contributed to this report.
