How To Find The Perfect Little Black Dress

Published: November 29, 2007

Every woman needs a little black dress. But if you don't have one (or you're ready for a new one), here are some tips from celebrity stylist Cristina Ehrlich:

•If you are thin or not so curvy, you want a dress that will give you some shape. A dress with more of an empire waist works well to accentuate your chest.

•If you are curvy, with an hourglass figure, an A-line dress works well. It will cinch at your waist to enhance your figure. A fitted or V-neck top also will accentuate your curves.

•If you are larger-busted, a well-cut V-neck dress is your best bet. Don't expose too much, but the neckline will show off a beautiful decolletage and the V will act like an arrow, bringing attention downward.

•If you are pear-shaped, an empire cut dress or silhouette with a higher waist will help keep fabric from hugging your hips. The hem should end just above or below the knee, at the slimmest part of your leg. Curvier figures should avoid dresses cut on the bias - they are very tricky to pull off.

•If you are petite, it's important that your dress is a bit shorter to help elongate your legs. Just keep in mind the tips above if you are a curvy petite or a thin petite.
