Mitchum's '49 Turn In 'Holiday Affair' Brings Romance

Published: November 29, 2007

The letter of the week asks about a favorite holiday film, but it's an obscure one.

"Every year people talk about how much they like 'It's a Wonderful Life' and 'Miracle on 34th Street.' But I remember a sweet, romantic film about a couple in New York who fall in love at Christmas - I think Robert Mitchum is the man. Do you know if that movie is being shown anywhere this year?" writes Ann Davis of Lakeland.

In the 1949 film "A Holiday Affair," Janet Leigh plays a World War II widow with a young son who crosses paths with a department store clerk and war veteran (Mitchum). Their relationship gets off to a rocky start when he gets her fired and then she gets him fired. Look for it at 10 p.m. Dec. 23 and 1:45 p.m. Dec. 24 on Turner Classic Movies.

Carolann Schmidt e-mailed her distain for Marie Osmond this week with a sincere hope that she would not win "Dancing With the Stars," noting she didn't deserve it. Helio Castroneves won.

Finally, there was a flood of e-mails this week answering my trivia question. A lot of people knew that Andre the Giant played Bigfoot on "The Six Million Dollar Man." The winner of the "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" lunchbox is Wayne Greenberg of Tampa, who zipped that e-mail in really fast.

Others who know their bionic history include Byron Holz, Rick Workman, M.D. Jones, Sheila Bregg, Pamela Easterling, Michale D. Jones, Mark J. Mirabella, Chris Bracciale, Barry Clark, Karen Bullard, Larry Wrobel, Douglas Thompson, Ron Witzel, Bill Berry, Howard Musgrave, Cathy McBride, Jesus Dominguez Jr., Matthew J. Jowanna, Richard Bozeman, Lawrence Powell, Derick Bergmeyer, D.J. Berg and Bob Rashad.

Readers Alva Loar and Brett Scarff pointed out that this Bigfoot was a robotic one controlled by aliens. And Chuck Ferguson noted that this Bigfoot helped Steve Austin stop a volcano from destroying a town with a portable time machine that froze lava.

Reader Matt Grim confessed: "I'm not really smarter than a fifth-grader. I Googled the answer."

This week's trivia question: Name the 1960s TV series that featured a cute little mutt that had no name. Send your questions, comments and trivia answers to wbelcher@tampatrib.com.
