LAND O' LAKES - A team of counselors helped Land O' Lakes High School students and staff members work through their grief Wednesday, one day after two teenagers were killed in an accident on Handcart Road in east Pasco County.
David B. Osteen, 18, a senior at Land O' Lakes High, and Rebecca McCann, 16, a sophomore, died when the 1996 Honda Accord they were in collided with another vehicle Tuesday.
The counselors, known as a crisis-intervention team, will be at the high school again today, said Summer Robertson, a spokeswoman for the Pasco County school district.
The two teenagers, with Osteen driving, were traveling south on Handcart Road, south of Prospect Road, about 2:40 p.m. Tuesday when Osteen tried to pass another vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The tread separated on the Accord's right rear tire and the car began to rotate counterclockwise, the patrol said.
As the Accord spun, it went into the path of a northbound 2003 Kia Sedona, which hit the Accord's passenger side, the report said.
The car and the van came to rest on the east shoulder of Handcart Road.
The driver of the Sedona, Connie Johns, 41, of Dade City, was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. Her injuries were not life threatening, the patrol said.
