NEW PORT RICHEY - Country singer Charlie Daniels visited the Pasco County Sheriff's Office on Thursday to thank Sheriff Bob White for his support of The Angelus, a home for severely handicapped people.
White, in turn, made Daniels an honorary deputy in front of a room full of staff and media.
"You're a stand-up guy, Charlie Daniels," White told the singer.
The 71-year-old Daniels appeared in blue jeans, a red long-sleeved shirt, cowboy hat and boots. His hair and beard have turned to white, but his voice still maintained its well-known ring as he sang "Amazing Grace."
Daniels, known for his 1979 hit "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," has been a supporter of The Angelus since 1990, raising money and educating the public about the home and its services. The home is on Hudson Avenue between Hays and Hicks roads in Hudson.
Daniels thanked the sheriff's office staff for its work, telling the small gathering of his longtime support of law enforcement and the military.
"I can't begin to articulate how much I respect you people and the jobs you do," Daniels said.
White has hosted shootouts for charity and donated part of the proceeds to The Angelus. In 2006, White presented the home with $50,000 raised during the shootout.
