PLANT CITY – Police continued to search today for a suspect who tried Saturday to steal a man's 2004 Corvette at gunpoint.
The gunman fired shots at the 24-year-old Plant City resident in the carjacking attempt near the intersection of Alabama and Warnell streets, police said.
The victim told police he was driving east on Warnell Street, at about 9:20 p.m. when a motorist going in the opposite direction blocked his path, said Plant City police spokesman Sgt. James Shultz. The suspect pointed a pistol at the victim and told him to get out of his sports car, Shultz said.
"The victim said he put his car in reverse, ducked down and drove backwards to escape," Shultz said. "As he was backing up he heard three or four shots."
The Corvette was struck once the driver's side just below the windshield. That bullet passed through the instrument panel and lodged in the passenger side of the vehicle, Shultz said. Two more bullets struck the front of the vehicle below the bumper.
The victim was unhurt.
The victim told police the suspect was black, about 18 to 20 years old, weighing 200 pounds, and was driving a blue, four door, smaller sized Buick.
Anyone having information about the attempted carjacking is asked to call Shultz at (813) 757-9200.
