Despite Sloppiness, Sickles Takes Win Against Mitchell

TAMPA - The good news for Sickles coach Mark Key was the Gryphons defeated Mitchell 51-31 in a Class 6A-District 7 girls basketball game Thursday.

The bad news was the way his team achieved it.

"We were very sloppy," Key said. "That was one of the worst games we've played. Our offense wasn't fluid and we had too many turnovers. We played hard; the effort was there. It was just real sloppy."

Mitchell (3-2, 1-2) controlled the pace early and purposely slowed things down. The strategy worked, as the Mustangs led 7-5 after the first quarter.

The Gryphons (8-0, 3-0) were able to up the tempo slightly in the second quarter and went into halftime up 17-10.

Sickles' half-court trap helped the Gryphons pull away in the third quarter and up their lead to 39-15 going into the fourth.

"We pulled away in the second half," Key said. "We were a little more aggressive with our trap to start the third quarter and that led to some easy baskets off turnovers and really got our transition game going."

Sickles senior guard Shawnta Snakovsky led all scorers with 16 points - seven below her season average.

"It wasn't one of Shawnta's better games," Key said. "But when you have two of your better players in foul trouble starters Katie MacKenzie and Melissa Ramsey each picked up their third foul in the second quarter, it's going to make it more difficult on Shawnta."
MacKenzie finished with 11 points, while Ramsey had seven - all from the free-throw line.

Latoya Hillmon led the Mustangs with 10 points.
