If you think the face of the typical homeless person in Hillsborough County is a scraggly bum on a park bench, think again.
Children and families make up the bulk of Hillsborough County's estimated 9,500 homeless. Nearly one-third of those who are homeless have jobs; one in four is a child.
The Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County is trying to raise public awareness of these painful facts.
The coalition has brought together representatives from the city of Tampa and Hillsborough County governments and many faith-based and social services organizations. Among its goals is to pool the resources of all the groups to provide more efficient services for the homeless.
The coalition has smartly started with a public education campaign. Once the public understands who the homeless really are, perhaps more progress can be made in assisting these unlikely victims.
