Help The Hungry

Many homebound elderly, children and their families will be going without food this Thanksgiving. There is now hope for these families: The Volunteer Way Food Bank will be distributing turkeys.

Help give a family hope for the holidays.

I am the president of The Volunteer Way Food Bank. For the past 21 years I have been reaching out to hungry children and their families with love, compassion and hope. Just in Pasco County, we are assisting 5,500 children and their families, the homeless and the elderly with food because they have nowhere else to go to get it.

Over the past 21 years we have seen many hurting people put their lives back together and become self-sufficient and productive citizens of our community. Every time we help families put their lives back together, we are enriching our community and making Pasco a better place for all to live, work and raise a family.

This is why we are coming to you for help. Your gift will go a long way toward ending hunger this Thanksgiving.

While you are surrounded by families and friends at your Thanksgiving feast, you will know that you had a vital part of giving hope to families that had no hope and giving them the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

Forward Thinking

Regarding 'Waste-To-Energy Plant Might Grow,' Sept. 26:

As the treasurer of R.E.S.O.R.C.E Recycling Club Inc., I find the news is that our county commissioners in Pasco have come around to our way of thinking in that the waste-to-energy plant should grow and that mandatory recycling is the only sensible plan for our county.

We applaud them individually and as an organization. We offer our full support in making this a reality. We believe, as was stated by Commissioner Michael Cox, that it is the right thing to do.

Burying your garbage is not an answer; it is a cover-up, and it will come back to haunt you in the future. We should not worry that there will not be enough garbage for the new plant. History has shown us that it will not be a problem, particularly when our next growth spurt occurs.

Let's all support our commissioners for thinking about the future.

A Money-Earner

Regarding 'Waste-To-Energy Plant Might Grow,' Sept. 26:

I read with interest your article on Pasco County's waste-to-energy decision. Just a point of clarification: Polk County does earn approximately $25,000 to $30,000 per month with its current recycling recovery and marketing program. That is $300,000 to $360,000 per year - a number we are quite proud of.

We processed approximately 29,000 tons of recyclables last year. The value of landfill 'air space' saved through our diversion/recycling program (just over $1 million) would be in addition to the above amount.

Thank you for covering solid waste and recycling.
