Friends and family celebrated the 100th birthday of Edward Graham at a party Sunday at the Regency Park Civic Association.
New York firefighters and Pasco County Sheriff Bob White honored Graham for his service as a volunteer firefighter and security officer. He was honored at a county commission meeting Tuesday.
Born Sept. 25, 1907, in Astoria, N.Y., Graham sang songs to sell savings stamps for World War I as a child. He later was assigned to guard the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor during a time of civil uprising and served in the Coast Guard Reserve during World War II. He was a volunteer firefighter in New York for 12 years.
Graham and his late wife, Elsie B. Graham, married on May 18, 1929, and the couple had two children. They had been married for 73 years when she died in 2002.
Graham received an award for bravery after he apprehended a robber in New York City during the World's Fair of 1937. In 1959, the Grahams moved to Miami, where Edward was in the Civil Air Patrol for 15 years. They later moved to Regency Park, where Graham served on the security patrol for 30 years. He still participates a few times each month.
