PLANT CITY - After five years, Plant City's Bike Fest is as strong as ever, organizers say, as they prepare for its fifth anniversary Saturday.
Marion Smith, president of the founding organization, the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, expects the 5 to 10 p.m. celebration to draw about 20,000 people to the streets of Plant City's historical downtown district.
About 80 vendors will sell items ranging from motorcycle accessories to food. Big Deal & Nuthin Fancy, a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, will play the main stage at McCall Park, at Collins and Drane streets. The chamber of commerce's foundation will be giving away a 42-inch high-definition television in a drawing, with tickets costing $5. Proceeds go toward a scholarship fund, Smith said. The foundation awarded about $10,000 in scholarships last year.
A family-friendly atmosphere is a hallmark of Bike Fest, organizers said. When the event was proposed five years ago, some worried that Bike Fest would draw motorcycle gangs and bring unwelcome disturbances to the downtown streets, organizers said.
Bike Fest is centered on Union Station Welcome Center, 102 N. Palmer St.
