Regarding 'Breaking A Sweat Isn't Required In P.E.' (front page, Sept. 23):
As a retired school teacher who taught for 40 years, I was appalled at the Hillsborough P.E. program that I read about in The Tampa Tribune. I understood that the state had required 150 minutes a week. When I read that article I thought in no way were they following the law.
Copying a menu might exercise the fingers, but it does not qualify as a P.E. class, and discussing good health rules was never a P.E. activity - it was a separate class under health education.
We had a recess period of 15 minutes in the morning and again in the afternoon. It was a period of time where the children were moving. Of course I taught in the years that President Kennedy mandated it, but it was something I did all the 40 years I taught. If I were a parent and my child was in the Hillsborough school system, I would be up at the school demanding that they follow the law.
