GAINESVILLE - Jacksonville Jaguars safety Reggie Nelson, University of Florida tight end Aaron Hernandez and two other current Florida players were among several people interviewed Sunday as Gainesville police investigated a shooting early Sunday morning that left one man in serious condition after being shot in the head.
Gainesville police spokesman Lt. Keith Kameg said none of the players are suspects in the shooting. He said investigators are asking anyone who attended a nightclub near the crime scene late Saturday night or early Sunday morning - the Gators' 20-17 loss to Auburn ended at 11:27 p.m. Saturday - if they know anything that might help police find the shooter.
Corey Smith, 28, and Justin Glass, 19, sat in a car in traffic on West University Avenue early Sunday morning when a man walked toward their car and fired into the car with a handgun. Smith, the passenger, was shot in the head. Glass was shot in the arm.
'We interviewed a number of people,' Kameg said Monday night. 'We do not want people to read into this that they were in any way involved with the crime.'
Nelson's agent, Hadley Englehard, told reporters that his client - a former Florida star - was at the nightclub Saturday but left hours before the shooting. Nelson later released a statement saying he wasn't involved.
Kameg declined to name the current Florida players, but Hernandez's mother, Terri, told The Orlando Sentinel that her son was interviewed but said he didn't see the shooting. Terri Hernandez declined comment when contacted by The Tampa Tribune early Monday evening. Following Florida's practice later Monday, Hernandez declined comment when asked about the interview.
