GULFPORT - A staff member at the Hamilton Disston exceptional education center has resigned amid an investigation by campus police.
Elbert Newton's resignation is effective Wednesday, said Andrea Zahn, spokeswoman for the Pinellas County school system.
The 31-year-old supervised an in-school suspension room, but was not considered a teacher, Zahn said. He has worked for the school system since last year.
Once campus police complete their investigation, they are likely to refer the case to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office to see whether a charge of simple battery is warranted. The case involves inappropriate conduct with a student.
Zahn wouldn't provide further details.
