Published: October 3, 2007

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A moment of silence was held to honor Memphis defensive lineman Taylor Bradford before Tuesday night's game between the Tigers and Marshall. Memphis won 24-21.

Instead of the normal bouncing and running entrance from the locker room before the game, Memphis walked slowly out of the tunnel arm-and-arm in rows of five players each.

Bradford, a junior from Nashville, died after a shooting at a residential complex on the Memphis campus about 9:45 p.m. Sunday. He drove a short distance before his car crashed into a tree. Emergency workers answering the wreck call, discovered Bradford was shot. He died later at a Memphis hospital.

Memphis authorities continued to investigate the death Tuesday, and there were no suspects in custody.

Ex-Backup Punter Sentenced 7 Years

GREELEY, Colo. - Former Northern Colorado backup punter Mitch Cozad was sentenced to seven years in prison Tuesday for stabbing the starter in his kicking leg.

Cozad was convicted in August of second-degree assault in the Sept. 2006 attack on Rafael Mendoza. He was acquitted of the more serious charge of attempted first-degree murder.

The 22-year-old Cozad faced up to 16 years in prison.

LOUISVILLE: Willie Williams, who was dismissed from the Louisville football team last week after being charged with marijuana possession, pleaded not guilty Tuesday.

Williams also pleaded not guilty to tampering with physical evidence, a felony, during his arraignment in Jefferson County District Court, The Courier-Journal reported.

STANFORD: Quarterback T.C. Ostrander will miss this week's game against Southern California after having a seizure at a restaurant over the weekend.

TEXAS A&M: Like it or not Texas A&M fans, Dennis Franchione says he's not leaving any time soon.

Franchione - under fire for a blowout loss to Miami and news of his secretive, for-pay newsletter to boosters - gave a defiant, emotional speech in an auditorium packed with his players Tuesday. He said he has the support of athletics director Bill Byrne and has no intention of stepping down.
