It's entry deadline time; time to turn in those applications; time to pony up those entry fees. Here are details about made-by-hand crafts, poised pageant participants, a show of shutterbug skills and a competition for young writers.
SAN ANTONIO
COMMERCIAL-FREE CRAFTS: Artists and crafters can secure a space for $60 at the 41st annual San Antonio Rattlesnake Festival, set for Oct. 20 and 21 in San Antonio City Park.
The festival traditionally draws thousands of spectators to the folksy festival that features not only reptile shows but an elaborate arts and crafts show that prohibits commercial products.
All items must be handmade and, in keeping with the festival's philosophy of living in harmony with nature, must contain no animal products.
The rental fee is for a 10-foot-by-10-foot space for both days. Applications for the arts and crafts show are available online at www.Rattlesnake festival.com.
Rattlesnake and Gopher Enthusiasts Inc. stages the festival to raise money for other nonprofit service organizations, many focused on youth and the environment.
PICKS OF THE PAGEANT: From princess to queen, winners of the Miss Rattler Pageant's age categories will reign during the San Antonio Rattlesnake Festival.
Sunday is the deadline to enter for $40. Contestants can register at the Oct. 14 pageant for an additional $10.
The pageant is open to girls 4 to 18 who live in Pasco, Polk, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Hernando or Sumter counties. Contestants will compete for crowns, banners, trophies and flowers in the categories of casual wear, gown and 'personal introduction.' They'll be judged on poise, personality, communications skills and overall appearance.
A winner and three runners-up will be selected in each age division: 4 to 6, Princess Rattler; 7 to 9, Sweetheart Rattler; 10 to 12, Pre-Teen Rattler; 13 to 15, Teen Rattler; and 16 to 18, Queen Rattler.
Contestants will get complimentary hair styling from Salon De Rosa. Applications are available online and at San Antonio City Hall.
ZEPHYRHILLS
SHOOTING FOR PRIZES: Applications are available for a Nov. 4 amateur photography contest that's part of the Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce's Art in the Park event.
Entry fee is $5 a photo. Categories are: black and white; sports; humor; animals and pets; and nature. The deadline is Nov. 1. For details, call the chamber at (813) 782-1913.
