Rams To Start Frerotte For Injured Bulger

Published: October 4, 2007

ST. LOUIS - One day after insisting he'd stick with Marc Bulger, St. Louis Rams coach Scott Linehan benched his banged-up quarterback.

The winless Rams will go with backup Gus Frerotte on Sunday against Arizona, Linehan said Wednesday. Frerotte and Bulger, who has been ineffective while playing with two broken ribs, got the news Tuesday from the coach.

Linehan also will return to play-calling in an effort to wake up a dormant offense that has scored only two touchdowns, yanking duties from offensive coordinator Greg Olson. Olson was Linehan's first hire when he got the job last year, and he will move to the coaches booth, where he'll assist the head coach.

Linehan said sitting Bulger was his call after reviewing the past three games, and not a decision made under pressure from superiors.

'I look forward to a healthy Marc Bulger getting back in the lineup as soon as possible,' Linehan said. 'It's obvious to me there is something genuinely wrong, and I knew there was.'

BILLS: Rookie Trent Edwards will make his second straight start after J.P. Losman missed practice. Coach Dick Jauron ruled Losman out, saying the quarterback is recovering steadily from a sprained left knee, but it is not clear when he'll be able to practice.

DOLPHINS: Safety Travares Tillman, who has 11 tackles this season, had arthroscopic knee surgery.

49ERS: Quarterback Alex Smith learned nothing new about his separated right shoulder, which will keep him out of Sunday's game. Orthopedic surgeon James Andrews, who looked at results of the team's MRI exam, confirmed the 49ers' original diagnosis of a moderate shoulder separation that won't require surgery.

PANTHERS: After a weak performance that left its fans booing and defensive tackle Kris Jenkins calling out his teammates, Carolina held a players-only meeting. The sitdown, called by guard Mike Wahle, came three days after Jenkins said the Panthers had 'no heart' following a 20-7 home loss to the Bucs.

'I think it's a good idea,' tackle Jordan Gross said before the meeting. 'There has been a lot that has gone on in the last week. I mean, we're a team where everybody gets along real well. Instead of just talking in the locker room, we might as well have everybody present. It's not a big drama story. We just want to talk.'

PATRIOTS: Safety Rodney Harrison, suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances, has rejoined the team.

RAIDERS: Running back Dominic Rhodes returned to practice after his four-week suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.
