CONCORD, N.C. - The owner of Lowe's Motor Speedway threatened to shut down the track and open another one elsewhere after the city council derailed his plans to build a drag-racing strip at the site.
Smith is prepared to spend the estimated $350 million to build a track elsewhere in the Charlotte area, because he was considering updating the existing track.
Shutting down the speedway would cost both Concord and Cabarrus County millions in tax revenue.
F1 INVESTIGATION: Lewis Hamilton is being investigated by Formula One's governing body for his role in an accident during his victory in last week's Japanese Grand Prix.
Hamilton is said to have speeded up and slowed down while driving behind the safety car, causing Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel to collide behind him. Hamilton could be penalized grid positions in Sunday's race.
ARCA QUALIFYING: Dario Franchitti, in his first official day in a stock car, qualified sixth for the ARCA RE/MAX 250 at Talladega. The reigning IndyCar Series champion and Indianapolis 500 winner will make his race debut today.
