GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mike Anderson (above right, with 'Reel Animals' partner Billy Nobles).
The daily showers mixed with the cooling temperatures have brought things to life along Cockroach Bay and the south shore.
Tuesday's rain did not deter us from getting out to take a look. Fishing pot holes from Piney Point to the Cockroach Bay channel produced several nice snook, a couple of redfish 18-23 inches long and about a dozen trout.
Most of the trout were around the 15-inch mark, but we did have one that was just less than 18 inches. All of the fish were caught on Gulp's new-penny-colored jerk shad.
Wednesday brought much of the same, although we went for a change of venue.
We were down in Charlotte Harbor pre-fishing for Saturday's redfish tournament out of Punta Gorda. The bite was similar to Tuesday's, with the snook eager to take our baits.
The redfish were not in large schools, but we managed to find a good number of decent-sized fish mixed in with the mullet schools in Lemon and Turtle bays. Once again, new penny was a good color choice, but we also caught several on pearl white, which is a good color when working mullet.
There seem to be good bait schools from the flats to the markers in Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor, so if live bait is your game it should not be hard to find. And as good as the bite was this week on artificials, the live bait bite should be off the hook.
