TAMPA - Two kinds of smoke floated Saturday morning over the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4321 in Hyde Park.
Small wisps rose from the blackened building after an overnight fire, and members and their supporters rallied around a barbecue grill for their first fundraiser to rebuild it.
The blaze broke out in the back corner of the building at about 2:15 a.m. Investigators suspect that a utility wire dropped down, said post commander Bruce Sitka. No one was inside when the fire broke out and no injuries were reported.
Since 1946, the cinder-block style building at 2010 Morrison St. has provided local veterans a place of fellowship and camaraderie.
Now, the building is pretty much destroyed and the 200 members it serves are unsure whether it can be rebuilt from the remaining walls, Sitka said.
Anyone wishing to help in the recovery can call Sitka for information at (813) 833-7388.
