PORT RICHEY - This weekend will be a busy time for bowlers and bowling fans in Pasco County. The area will host two significant bowling events
Lane Glo North in Port Richey is hosting a three-day PBA South Region tournament, beginning today with two squads. The first squad begins at 8 a.m., with the second starting at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, the final day of the tournament, play resumes at 8 a.m. Match play, featuring a round of 16, is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Guaranteed prize money for the first-place finish is $2,500.
Among the professionals expected to compete is Ocala's Water Ray Williams. If he attends, he will be on a hot streak of sorts. At a recent PBA region tournament in Port St. Lucie this month, Williams won the $2,500 first prize. Since becoming a professional bowler in 1980, Williams has 42 PBA titles and more than $3.6 million in winnings. For information on the PBA region tournament at Lane Glo North, call (727) 848-2566 or visit the PBA Web site at www.pba.com.
OPERATION GRATITUDE: The second of the bowling events in Pasco County next weekend is Operation Gratitude, a fundraiser to help members of the U.S. Armed Forces overseas.
The fundraiser is to raise money for troops, and items also are being accepted that servicemen and women can use or are in need of. Some of the items requested are toiletries (including disposable razors), books, magazines, pillows, DVDs and laptop computers so the troops can e-mail family and friends.
Another item the troops can use to keep in touch with family and friends are used cell phones, since their bases are set up with cellular towers.
But Operation Gratitude isn't just for the troops. Donations of school supplies and items for Iraqi children, such as crayons and coloring books, are being accepted so that the troops can distribute them.
Today's event at Hudson Bowl begins at 1 p.m. Door prizes will be awarded, and a raffle will be held. For $15, bowlers will receive three games, including shoe rental. For information, call Hudson Bowl at (727) 863-5481.
SENIOR TOURNAMENT: Hudson Bowl recently started a weekly Monday afternoon tournament for seniors, and it has proved to be popular. Competing bowlers must be 50 or older.
The Monday Fun handicap tournament costs $8 per bowler, and each bowler rolls three games. The top three bowlers in both series and single games receive a cash payout. The more bowlers, the higher the purse. For information, call Hudson Bowl at (727) 863-5481.
HONOR SCORES: Recent high scores at Hudson Bowl were recorded by Jason Mahr (300/836), Rick Rodenberger (288), Bill Smith (282), Melanie O'Grady (256) and April Smyth (251).
