Published: October 6, 2007

PLANT CITY - Durant went into halftime ahead 13-6 against Class 6A-District 6 opponent Sarasota, with the running game led by junior running back Ryan Rice looking strong. However, before play could resume, the lights were literally turned out on the game. Lightning forced a suspension of the game at 10:05 Friday night after two attempts to get the players back on the field. Lightning and no lights for 30 minutes forced the second half to be rescheduled for Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The first half was played under steady rainfall with the Sailors getting the early advantage in the opening minute. Sarasota forced a three-and-out on the Cougars and were able to force a fumble on the punt attempt and Sailors' linebacker Luke Spencer recovered the ball at the 5-yard line and took it in for the first score.

Junior running back Ryan Rice scored for the Cougars on a 2-yard run in the opening play of the second quarter, and would again on a 3-yard run, but Durant missed the extra point.

BISHOP VEROT 30, LENNARD 20: One good half of football was enough for Bishop Verot to overcome Lennard.

In remaining unbeaten at 5-0 and improving to 2-0 in Class 2A- District 5, the Vikings erased a 13-0 deficit with 30 consecutive points in a 30-20 home win.

Behind undersized junior quarterback Andrew Burdick, the Longhorns (0-6, 0-1) went ahead 13-0 on a pair of ball-hogging touchdown drives that were capped by a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs by Burdick.

Verot pulled within 13-9 at halftime on Butch Moore's 32-yard field and his 15-yard pass to Garrett Redden after a pooch kick ended up in the Vikings' hands.

PALMETTO 38, ROBINSON 7: The Palmetto High defense saw its string of scoreless quarters end at 16, but no one was complaining after the way the Tigers dismantled Robinson in a Class 3A-District 11 contest at Harllee Stadium.

The Tigers (5-0, 2-0) had strung together three straight shutouts and had not given up any points since Southeast scored 7 on them in the third quarter of the first game of the season.

On a wet field, the Tigers abandoned their passing game and rolled up 241 yards on the ground. They held a 35-0 lead at halftime.
