PITTSBURGH - When the Pirates last fired a manager this quickly, he couldn't get his team into the World Series. Jim Tracy was let go because he didn't produce anything resembling a winning season.
Tracy was ousted Friday after two years filled with long losing streaks and little discernible progress by a team that has had 15 consecutive losing seasons, one short of the major-league record.
The Pirates also fired three other baseball operations executives during an ongoing shakeup that began last month with General Manager Dave Littlefield's firing.
'Jim and I worked very hard over the last week to try and see if we could make it work and to try to see how we could work going forward,' said new general manager Neal Huntington, who took over with only six days left in the season. 'But at the end of the day, it was decided it was probably better to part ways.'
Mets' Glavine Declines His Option For 2008
NEW YORK - Mets pitcher Tom Glavine declined his $13 million option with New York, making himself eligible for free agency.
The 41-year-old lefty, who got his 300th win this year, gets a $3 million buyout in addition to his $7.5 million salary this year.
'Tom has not had enough time to sufficiently think things through with his family and did not want to make a decision until he had the opportunity with them to reflect on his future in baseball as well as his future with the Mets,' said Glavine's agent, Gregg Clifton.
ATHLETICS: Third baseman Eric Chavez will have back surgery next week and is expected to be ready by spring training.
The injury-plagued six-time Gold Glove third baseman had surgery on his right shoulder in early September.
ORIOLES: Vice president of baseball operations Jim Duquette resigned after two seasons with the struggling franchise.
Baltimore ended its 10th consecutive losing season Sunday with a 69-93 record and a fourth-place finish in the AL East, 27 games behind first-place Boston.
PADRES: Outfielder Milton Bradley was fined but not suspended for his confrontation last month with umpire Mike Winters.
Winters previously was suspended for inciting Bradley.
Bob Watson, baseball's VP in charge of discipline, said that Bradley was not suspended 'because no contact was made' during the incident Sept. 24.
