TAMPA - It took longer than expected, but the family of late comedian Richard Jeni has released three DVDs that originally aired as concert specials on either HBO or Showtime in the 1990s.
The DVDs have officially been available online at www.richardjeni.com since Monday. 'A Good Catholic Boy,' 'Platypus Man' and 'Crazy From the Heat' are $17.99 each. The family had hoped to release the material in August.
'I had some issues with the quality of the finished products and thought they could have been improved upon, and they were,' said Mary Colangelo, Jeni's sister.
Born Richard John Colangelo, Jeni died in March after a brief, debilitating battle with mental illness. Critically revered, he often appeared on 'The Tonight Show' and toured relentlessly. He was a longtime favorite at Tampa Bay area comedy clubs.
There also are future plans to release 'The Boy From New York City,' Jeni's breakthrough 1990 Showtime special, as well as material culled from the comic's extensive personal archives.
'There's loads of footage and written material, some of which Rich had already put into various stages of preparation for production,' Mary Colangelo said.
