TAMPA - Plant defeated Berkeley Prep 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 on Saturday to capture its third straight Tampa Bay Invitational championship.
Senior setter Kellie Catanach was dominant in the final day of the two-day tournament for the Panthers. Catanach had 77 assists Saturday, including 30 in the final match against the Buccaneers.
'She has uncanny senses,' Plant coach Leanna Taylor said. 'She really knows where people are around her and where the holes are.'
Plant (18-1) and Berkeley Prep (10-7) finished atop their respective pools to compete in the Gold Bracket of the tournament. The Buccaneers defeated Fort Myers, and the Panthers defeated Fort Myers Bishop Verot in the semifinals.
Taylor said her team's success is something she expected, even if others didn't.
'We were ranked third coming into this tournament, so we really didn't feel the pressure,' Taylor said. 'We just played our game.
'People aren't really expecting much from us since we lost four starters from last year. But we are going to continue to prepare and see where the season goes.'
Host team Tampa Prep won the bronze bracket, taking ninth place by defeating Boca Raton Spanish River 22-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-15.
DURANT WINS TITLE: Durant (13-5) got past Bloomingdale 20-25, 25-13, 15-4 to win the Bayshore Christian tourney.
