An average of 3,500 car crashes with injuries happen every year on U.S. 19 in the 95-mile stretch between Pinellas and Citrus counties, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
Officials say a third of them are related to aggressive driving.
In an effort to curb the number of crashes, the Department of Transportation will kick off a three-month safety campaign Wednesday called "See the Lights, Save a Life," asking drivers to stay within the speed limit, stop on red lights, buckle up and watch out for pedestrians.
The campaign coincides with the start of several construction projects to add street lighting on U.S. 19 in Hernando County from Spring Hill Drive to State Road 50.
Law enforcement will also beef up patrols on U.S. 19 during the campaign.
A news conference on the campaign will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Tahitian Resort parking lot, 2337 U.S. 19.
