SARASOTA - The art and culture of contemporary Cuba will be explored in a series of films, lectures and performances at the historical Asolo Theater today through Saturday.
The schedule:
Today, 7 p.m.: The film 'Vertical Love,' directed by Arturo Soto, tells the story of a young couple, desperate in their desire for privacy, who can only make love in an elevator; $7.
Tuesday, 11 a.m.: The dance program 'Echoes of Cuba Through Dance' explores the work of choreographer Leymis Bolanos Wilmott, who draws from her Cuban heritage to experiment with movement; $20.
Tuesday, 7 p.m.: The film 'Strawberry and Chocolate,' directed by Senel Paz, follows the life of a gay man who falls in love with a doctrinaire Communist; $7.
Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.: Photographer Clyde Butcher discusses his work and current exhibit at the museum; $25.
Thursday, 7 p.m.: The film 'Things I Left in Havana,' directed by Manuel Aragon, follows three sisters who leave Cuba for a better life in Spain; $7.
Friday, 7 p.m.: The film 'The Virgin Rose,' directed by Manuel Aragon, follows a young sailor who works on a ship illegally transporting immigrants; $7.
Saturday, 8 p.m.: Havana-born composer Alfredo Triff Boleros Perdidos presents: 'Love Songs Lost,' a song-cycle for voice, bass, drum, violin and congas; $30.
