DADE CITY - Police still are investigating a single-car crash that killed a 20-year-old local man Saturday.
Alan Joseph Carter, of 36040 Elli Way, was driving west on Kent Bradley Street on Saturday afternoon when he failed to negotiate the turn onto Lynan Farms Drive, police have said.
He crashed his mother's 2002 Kia through a split-rail fence, clipping a tree and then smashing into a house near the porch and landing in the living room area, said Capt. David Duff, of the Dade City Police Department. He was the only one in the vehicle.
No one was injured in the house at 36205 Lynan Farms Drive, but the structure had about $25,000 damage, Duff said.
Exactly what happened remains a mystery.
"There's no scuff marks on the streets," Duff said today. "There's no acceleration marks."
There's nothing, not even dug up dirt and grass, he added, to indicate Carter tried to brake before the accident at 3 p.m.
"We don't know if he had a medical problem," Duff said. "Something went terribly, terribly wrong. We don't know what."
Duff said they're awaiting an autopsy report, but it could be weeks before toxicology test results are back.
Police learned Carter was in the Dade City Wal-Mart about 45 minutes before the crash, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
"He appeared to be fine," Duff said. "In fact, the clerk knew him."
