The community is invited to take action this week in the ongoing effort to stop domestic violence and sexual assault, both on local and global levels.
In recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Sunrise Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center will host the Annual East Pasco County Domestic and Sexual Violence Task Force breakfast 8-10 a.m. today at the Dade City Woman'sClub, 37922 Palm Ave. in Dade City.
The guest speaker for this event will be Julie Ann Rivers-Cochran, DELTA Prevention Project state coordinator at the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence. According to a news release, she 'will talk about the importance of social change and community mobilization, as well as developing youth leadership to end intimate partner violence.'
DELTA stands for Domestic Violence Prevention Enhancement and Leadership Through Alliances.
'The DELTA program is made possible through a nationwide grant, with 14 states participating,' explained Penny Morrill, CEO of Sunrise. 'Sunrise is one of six centers in the state of Florida to receive funding for a DELTA project.'
For their project, Sunrise representatives are going into schools and educating young people about domestic violence to try to stop the problem before it starts.
'The bottom line is that we need to start talking to people at a young age to prevent first-time intimate partner violence,' Morrill said.
