LAND O' LAKES - On Sunday, the staff of Barnes and Co. Hair Port will come to work and collect none of the proceeds from their services. Instead, they are hosting a fundraiser for a Pasco County family. in need.
David and Amber Grimes have four children, two of whom - 8-year-old Lily and 2 1/2 -year-old Carlie - have been diagnosed with brain cancer.
The family also faces additional problems.
'David lost his first wife to breast cancer. He has lost his job, and the family has lost its home,' said Lori Barnes, owner of Hair Port.
As the Grimes found temporary residence with a Pasco family, friend Ronna Barger - a hairstylist with Hair Port - brought their case to the attention of her co-workers. They immediately offered their help.
'We felt we could do something to help a family that's been under a dark cloud,' Barnes said. 'Especially with the holidays coming, we'd like to give them a little bit of joy.'
With that in mind, the staff of Hair Port is planning a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the salon, 2346 Raden Drive.
The event will feature a cut-a-thon; a bake sale, in which baked goods will be sold for $1 and up; a carwash, in which vehicles can be washed for a requested donation of $5 to $10; and face painting.
DJ Rockin' Rob will play music, and a drawing will offer gift certificates for everything from pizza to massages, oil changes to car detailing, deli eats to restaurant meals, plus karate class memberships and a handmade purse and quilt.
In addition, more than 50 gift baskets from area restaurants and businesses, as well as from the New York Yankees, will be up for bid at a silent auction from 6-8 p.m. Friday, also hosted by Hair Port. The auction will be conducted at the Mad Hatter Utility building, 2348 Raden Drive.
Barnes is asking for donations of baked goods for the fundraiser. Those interested in helping out also can make a donation to the Grimes Family Trust at any Regions Bank.
'And the family always needs prayers,' Barnes said.
Barnes thanked those who have donated items for the fundraiser, including Planet H2O for event banners; Express Printing for printing services; and Mad Hatter Utility for the preparation of auction baskets.
