Canes Show Character During 2nd-Half Rally

Published: October 8, 2007

CORAL GABLES - The Miami Hurricanes lost in disappointing fashion Saturday to North Carolina, 33-27, dropping to 4-2 on the season.

WHAT WENT RIGHT: The Canes showed life in the third quarter after trailing 27-0 at halftime. They responded with touchdowns on three consecutive possessions, including a 97-yard touchdown reception by Darnell Jenkins from Kyle Wright.

'One good thing about the whole situation is that we had a chance after being 27 points down, and those guys did show some character in coming back and trying to fight to get back in the game and win the game,' Coach Randy Shannon said.

'I will tell them that, and I will tell everybody they did show character in trying to get back, because I don't think we would have done that last year or the year before. We would have just shut it down.'

WHAT WENT WRONG: The first half. Miami trailed 27-0 at halftime, which proved to be too big of a deficit to overcome. Although they made a comeback, Shannon said the game plan was the same between both halves.

'If you don't change anything that you do in the game plan and the second half is the way it is, it has got to be the players,' Shannon said.

Shannon does not believe the players are trusting the coaches.

'The thing that is amazing about this team is that you always have to fix something instead of just moving along and keep getting better,' Shannon said. 'You have to revert back. It comes back, and I told them this Saturday night, that they don't trust they are good players, and they don't trust the coaching staff right now.'

INJURY UPDATE: DT Antonio Dixon (knee) is going to be out at least four weeks. LB Colin McCarthy (mild concussion) is questionable for this week. LB Romeo Davis (knee) came back against Duke after suffering a torn ACL on Oct. 21, 2006, and played against North Carolina, but he will be shut down for the season.

CHALLENGE AHEAD: The Hurricanes host Georgia Tech (3-3, 1-3 ACC) on Saturday. Georgia Tech has defeated UM the past two seasons, including a 30-23 victory last year.

THEY SAID IT: 'The only thing you can do is show them how good they are and talk about it and keep stressing it. The more you say it, the more they will believe it. If you don't say it, they are going to keep going through the motions.' - Shannon on getting his players to believe in themselves.
