Runner Dies At Marathon
CHICAGO - In scorching heat and high humidity, the Chicago Marathon took a deadly turn Sunday.
One runner died, at least 49 were hospitalized and thousands were denied the chance to cross the finish line in the race long known for its brisk fall temperatures and flat terrain.
Kenya's Patrick Ivuti won the race by a fraction of a second.
The 88-degree heat and sweltering humidity were so draining that organizers shut down the second half of the course 3 1/2 hours after the start.
Ivuti leaned at the finish line to edge Jaouad Gharib of Morocco by 0.05 seconds. Ethiopia's Berhane Adere rallied to successfully defend her women's title.
Chad Schieber of Midland, Mich., 35, collapsed while running on the South Side and was pronounced dead shortly before 1 p.m. at a Veterans Affairs hospital, the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy was scheduled for today.
These were record temperatures for the Chicago Marathon, topping the mark of 84 degrees in 1979.
Henin Wins Porsche GP Title
STUTTGART, Germany - Top-ranked Justine Henin rallied to beat Tatiana Golovin 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 and win the Porsche Grand Prix, her eighth title of the year.
Henin dropped her first set since losing the Wimbledon semifinal to Marion Bartoli. But she stretched her winning streak to 16 matches, which included the title at the U.S. Open.
Golovin lost the Porsche Grand Prix final for the second straight year.

FORT LAUDERDALE - Ashley Flateland snapped a tie with a goal in the 72nd minute, giving the fifth-ranked University of Tampa women's soccer team (10-1-1) a 2-1 victory against Nova Southeastern (7-2, 3-1) in a Sunshine State Conference match.
Marissa Mohammed tied the game in the 58th minute.
USF TIES: Despite four shots on goal from junior forward Lindsay Brauer, the University of South Florida women's soccer team was held scoreless in 110 minutes, as the Bulls (2-5-2, 1-2-1) played to a scoreless tie with Villanova (7-1-5, 1-1-3) in a Big East match.
Panty Raid Gets Distaff Berth
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Todd Pletcher knows he has a Breeders' Cup qualifier in Panty Raid, but he isn't sure which race - if any - she'll enter at Monmouth Park later this month.
The 3-year-old filly earned an automatic bid to the BC Distaff by winning the $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes, Keeneland's fifth 'win and you're in' Cup qualifying race of the weekend.
Although the Spinster was run on Keeneland's Polytrack, Pletcher said Panty Raid also was a possibility for the BC Filly and Mare Turf - provided she's ready for either.
UT Volleyball Team Rallies
TAMPA - The top-ranked University of Tampa volleyball team rebounded from a Game 1 loss to defeat Lynn University, 27-30, 30-28, 30-14, 30-25.
The Spartans (18-1, 7-0) remain the only unbeaten team in the SSC. Lynn fell to 11-7, 3-5.
Katelen Dixon and Erin Clark led Tampa with 19 kills apiece.
USF WINS: At Milwaukee, Marcela Gurgel's 13 kills were not enough for the University of South Florida (10-5, 2-3), which lost 30-28, 30-19, 32-30 to Marquette (6-9, 3-2) in a Big East match.
