PALM RIVER - Sixty cowboys and cowgirls got on their steeds recently and guided them through puddles, over faux bridges, past a running squirrel and into a trailer.
In the end, it was a mule named Grace who took top billing in the recent Second Annual Cowboy Challenge at Crosstown Arena on U.S. 301.
Grace's owner, Bess Wall of Bunnell, took home a silver belt buckle and bragging rights. Grace won a custom-made leather halter from Texas. But the big winners were charities that will receive proceeds from the event, sponsored by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Posse.
Florida Special Olympics, the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranches for at-risk youth and Bakas Equestrian Center in Citrus park, a riding academy for people with disabilities, all will get a chunk of the nearly $5,000 raised during the event.
The challenge featured two obstacle courses. "It's all about teamwork, how we work together," Wall said.
Organizer Karl Boger said he was pleased with the attendance because food sale proceeds also go to charity.
