TAMPA – The chairman and chief executive officer of Progress Energy died today while on a business trip to London.
Robert McGehee, 64, and other Progress Energy executives were in England to meet with investors. He had a stroke Sunday and underwent surgery at Charing Cross Hospital. He did not regain consciousness, a company news release states.

McGehee joined Progress Energy's predecessor, Carolina Power & Light, in 1997 as a senior vice president and general counsel. He was promoted to president and chief operating officer in 2002 and named CEO and chairman in 2004.
McGehee is survived by his wife, Jolene; four children; and two grandchildren.
Progress Energy will meet Oct. 12 to implement a succession plan.
President and chief operation officer William Johnson has assumed the CEO duties.
