TAMPA - Boxing champion Nate Campbell won Round 2 on Wednesday in his effort to gain release from jail.
Campbell, 35, of Riverview, is the top-ranked lightweight competitor for the International Boxing Federation. Hillsborough County deputies arrested him Sept. 27 at the home of his former girlfriend, Kanesha James, 22, on charges of armed burglary, false imprisonment, witness tampering and domestic battery.
At Wednesday's bail hearing before Circuit Judge Walter Heinrich, James did not testify. Heinrich ordered Campbell released from Falkenburg Road Jail on his own recognizance but said the defendant can't have any contact with James.
The deputy's report states that the woman told him Campbell punched her, choked her and then pulled out a handgun and threatened to kill himself unless she came back to him, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter told the Tribune.
"When she did get the gun away from him, he pushed her on a counter and onto the floor, where he slammed her head repeatedly," Carter said.
Deputies reported that the woman suffered a bruise to an eye, an abrasion to an elbow and welts and bruises to her neck, Carter said.
