Regarding 'Buses Gain 5 Minutes' (Metro, Oct. 6):
Several months ago I purchased an automobile navigating system commonly called a GPS. I was amazed how detailed the verbal instructions were after I put an address or a street intersection location in the unit.
Seems to me this same system could answer some of the problems the Hillsborough County school bus operation is now experiencing. Using a GPS unit for the school bus route would simply allow anyone qualified to operate a school bus the ability to drive someone else's route even if they are not familiar with the route. Most GPS units have a timing function that would help in meeting the pickup schedule. Some units have the ability to access a driver's cell phone. This could give the dispatcher information and allow two-way communications on the cheap.
