Claire Page finished fourth in the 1-meter diving event at the Florida Swimming Pool Association Invitational last weekend in Orlando. Her 410.60 points in an area best. She talked about diving between trips to the springboard.
How did you decide to get into diving?
I was actually in swimming at Copeland Pool when I was little. I watched the divers go off the board, and I enjoyed watching. From there I talked to my mom about it a few times, and we decided to put me in lessons at age 7.
Was it that big a difference, going from swimming to diving?
It took a little time to get used to how you use the board. Once you get the hang of it you just have fun with it.
What's the feeling like when you're in the air?
It's actually amazing. You kind of don't feel like you have any limits when you're up in the air.
You dive off a 1-meter springboard. Have you done any diving off platforms?
Yeah. I did it once or twice when I was little but nothing too serious. When I was little it was a 5-meter platform. I've only jumped off a 10 meter platform. It's pretty high up there. But you just kind of get used to the height.
Describe a perfect dive?
When you could get out of the water you're full of energy. You think, 'Yeah, I really nailed that.' You can't think of anything else. You're just thinking, 'I caught it.'
