Ball, Relay Team Establishing Records At East Bay

Three school records have fallen at East Bay High School since the start of the boys swimming season.

Tyler Ball, a junior who qualified for the state swimming meet in both the 500 freestyle and the 200 individual medley, has set two school records this season in the 100-yard butterfly (55.25) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.40). Both records previously were set in the 1990s, according to Coach Ryan Leech.

Ball had a hand in setting a third school record. Ball, Chris Mills, Chris Collins and Josh Marzilli broke the school record in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.25), set in 1997.

Marzilli, a senior who is considering continuing his swimming career at the University of Tampa, has a season-best of 55.50 in the 100 butterfly, which Leech said is also the district's best time in that event.
Marzilli was a state qualifier last year in the 200 freestyle. Leech said he thinks Marzilli can hit the high 53s by the end of the season.

The Indians had lost just one meet as of last Tuesday, even though Leech said he doesn't have near the numbers he would like this year.

'I have only 12 boys and five of them are first-year swimmers,' Leech said. 'It's been difficult. It's been creative lineup writing to get the kids in the right events so we can score the most points.'

ALL IN THE FAMILY: This week's meeting between Plant and Hillsborough will be filled with family tension.

Hillsborough senior Reed Shimberg and his younger sister, Claire, will square off against their cousins Taylor Shimberg, a Plant senior, and her younger brother, Connor.

They're used to swimming together at Palma Ceia Country Club, but this is a rare competition between the four of them.

It's fun,' Reed said. 'We saw them last year and our grandparents and parents all came to watch us swim. I think we're going to take them this year, so I'm excited.'
