TAMPA - A 52-year-old woman is being treated for serious injuries after she was burned in a car fire outside a gasoline station on Dale Mabry Highway.
The woman, whose identity was not released, parked the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu near the back of the BP gas station at the corner of the highway and North B Street and went inside to purchase a couple of gallons of gasoline in a gas can, said Capt. Bill Wade with Tampa Fire Rescue.
She went back out to the car, and a couple of minutes later the car was on fire, Wade said.
"It is believed that whatever happened in that car, happened at her hand," he said.
Investigators are trying to determine what happened inside the car, he said.
Coincidentally, just as the woman was getting out of the burning car, a fire rescue investigator happened to be in the area and pulled up to the scene. The woman was in a state of shock and unable to speak with investigators, Wade said.
The investigator assisted the woman and gave her medical treatment until paramedics arrived. The woman was taken to Tampa General Hospital, Wade said.
