LEESBURG - Officials say a 12-year-old boy has died after playing a choking game alone in his room.
David Cody Hudson was a seventh-grader at Oak Park Middle School. His sisters found him unconscious on his bedroom floor with a white cotton karate belt around his neck.
Officials say he likely was trying to achieve a brief high by temporarily depriving his brain of oxygen. Besides death, other risks of the practice include strokes, seizures and retinal damage.
Hours before the accident, the boy's father had quizzed him about red marks on his neck, but the boy brushed off the question, saying he must have slept wrong.
Information from the Orlando Sentinel was used in this report.
